How EMI differs from a US loan payment

The arithmetic is the same, but two things are not. A US personal loan is quoted in months and priced at an APR that legally has to include fees, so the effective cost can be higher than the headline rate. An EMI is quoted against the reducing balance and excludes most processing fees, so the rate shown here understates what you actually pay unless you add the fee on top. This tool is aimed at reducing-balance loans priced as EMI, which is the norm in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Gulf. For a US personal loan, including fees in the real rate, use the Personal Loan Calculator instead.

The figure uses a standard reducing-balance amortisation with monthly compounding and a fixed rate for the whole term. Floating-rate loans, home loans with a reducing balance and a tenure change, and interest-only periods will all differ, as will any processing fee charged at disbursement.

What Is EMI Loan Calculator?

The EMI Calculator works out the monthly instalment on a reducing-balance loan, along with the total interest and the full year-by-year repayment schedule. The instalment stays level for the whole term, but the split between interest and principal shifts sharply from year to year.

Who Uses the EMI Loan Calculator?

Borrowers in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Gulf use it to check a sanction letter before signing, to compare a shorter tenure against a longer one, and to see how much of the first EMI is interest rather than principal. It is also the quickest way to check what happens if the rate or tenure changes.

How to Use the EMI Loan Calculator

  1. Enter the loan amount, pick your currency, and set the annual rate and tenure.
  2. Read the monthly EMI, total interest, and total repayment.
  3. Check the year-by-year table to see how slowly the balance falls early on.
